In the realm of art, irreverence, when negatively connoted, often underscores a subversive and critical strategy. Whether we think of iconoclasm or artistic vandalism, different practices of alteration, pastiches or satire, or extreme forms of art as well as a number of practices labelled as outrageous, irreverence both fades and draws its strength from the multiple variations and countless ways in which it becomes manifest.
