In this unique issue, Paul Ardenne proposes an analytic of the image: to define what is, upon close inspection, the “extreme” image; in the same breath, to consider the relation between the gaze and this type of image; finally, to attempt to answer the question: As gazing beings, why do we yearn for the brutality of the “extreme” image?
