Usant de l\u2019emprunt, de l\u2019ironie et de la mise en sc\u00e8ne pour interroger la fronti\u00e8re souvent t\u00e9nue entre r\u00e9alit\u00e9 et fiction, Moridja Kitenge Banza propose des \u0153uvres h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e8nes o\u00f9 s\u2019imbriquent collage, peinture, installation, photographie et performance, \u00e9voquant de mani\u00e8re formelle la pluralit\u00e9 des identit\u00e9s qui l\u2019habitent. Originaire de la R\u00e9publique d\u00e9mocratique du Congo, ayant v\u00e9cu en France et vivant d\u00e9sormais \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al, Kitenge Banza conjugue tradition et contemporan\u00e9it\u00e9 artistiques de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 mettre en exergue les notions de m\u00e9moire, de culture et d\u2019histoire. Dans cette optique, l\u2019artiste s\u2019approprie certains codes ou symboles forts v\u00e9hicul\u00e9s par les repr\u00e9sentations culturelles, politiques et sociales h\u00e9g\u00e9moniques pour en faire des satires visuelles du colonialisme culturel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les tableaux de la s\u00e9rie Christ pantocrator<\/em> (2017-) adoptent cette posture appropriationniste en faisant se chevaucher l\u2019image sainte du Christ en sauveur\u202f\u2013 sujet privil\u00e9gi\u00e9 de l\u2019iconographie chr\u00e9tienne byzantine\u202f\u2013 et celle de masques africains. En se r\u00e9appropriant l\u2019usage traditionnel des masques (et de l\u2019ic\u00f4ne) pour les d\u00e9tourner de leurs desseins thaumaturgiques ou sacr\u00e9s, Kitenge Banza fait un clin d\u2019\u0153il \u00e0 leur instrumentalisation dans l\u2019art moderne et aux multiples spoliations que ces objets ont subies aux mains des mus\u00e9es europ\u00e9ens, si friands d\u2019exotisme. V\u00e9ritable mise en abyme du pouvoir qu\u2019a l\u2019image d\u2019attester la v\u00e9racit\u00e9 de ce qu\u2019elle repr\u00e9sente, voire d\u2019\u00eatre plus vraie que nature, Christ pantocrator<\/em> va au-del\u00e0 d\u2019un discours afro-centriste pour stimuler des \u00e9changes entre les cultures et mettre en lumi\u00e8re la vacuit\u00e9 de la notion m\u00eame d\u2019authenticit\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette pr\u00e9occupation est explicitement soulev\u00e9e par l\u2019artiste dans la s\u00e9rie photographique Authentique<\/em> (2017-). Ici, Kitenge Banza se met en sc\u00e8ne aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de ses tableaux christiques, posant de mani\u00e8re sto\u00efque dans des d\u00e9cors \u00e9voquant ses identit\u00e9s congolaise et canadienne. Assis devant un muret dans son jardin de Montr\u00e9al, l\u2019artiste jongle avec les codes esth\u00e9tiques de l\u2019africanit\u00e9\u202f\u2013 couleurs vives, utilisation du wax (tissu africain)\u202f\u2013 et interroge le concept m\u00eame d\u2019\u00ab\u202fidentit\u00e9 africaine\u202f\u00bb et tout son appareillage iconographique, identit\u00e9 ne se mat\u00e9rialisant finalement que dans nos relations \u00e0 l\u2019Autre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chez Kitenge Banza, l\u2019ironie et l\u2019appropriation deviennent ainsi des strat\u00e9gies salutaires pour d\u00e9nouer ces liens souvent complexes qui lient un artiste et son \u0153uvre \u00e0 l\u2019ensemble des r\u00e9f\u00e9rents culturels qui marquent son identit\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
