Multidisciplinary artist Caroline Mauxion works with fabric and video, two new mediums that she incorporates into her large-scale installations alongside photography and sculpture. Her practice is rooted in an embodied crip perspective, which, beyond autobiographical representation, focuses on physical states of being, the orientations of desires, and a sensory relationship with spaces. Her work thus fits within a phenomenological approach aiming to examine the way in which our physical experience informs how we interact with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photographic image lies at the heart of her work, yet it is the close association with the body that is foregrounded when she uses plaster to transfer some of her photographs and to develop the notion of appareillage<\/em> (apparatus or equipment). She broaches the apparatus through plaster moulds that she connects with metal rods, not as a necessary compensation for a need but as a device that enables a physicality of the gaze. Similarly, with her patchwork pieces of household fabrics and printed images affixed to the wall, she renders the bed space vertically and engages spectators\u2019 proprioception\u200a\u2014\u200athat is, the perception of their own bodies in the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The video Malformes<\/em> (2025) opens on a choreography of hands connected by a sculpture, a mediating subject between the bodies. Archival medical photos appear intermittently as voices recount a story that interweaves theoretical and intimate reflections on the body, at first medicalized, and then desired and desiring. These interdependencies inhabiting Mauxion\u2019s works and actions are in line with the reflections of Alison Kafer, an American specialist in feminist, queer, and disability theories who proposes a model for disability that is political and relational. By intermingling images and narratives of various kinds, the video could be regarded as the modus operandi in all Mauxion\u2019s work, allowing her to develop a new rapport with the image and with narration in the form of performed iteration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
