catalogue VENDU—SOLD 2013

The Vendu–Sold catalogue allows us to take stock of the art market, by presenting the artists and artworks at the heart of this event and by shedding light on various aspects of the art market and its collaborators. In this year’s catalogue, Paul Maréchal reminds us thatthe business and art milieus have more in common than we might think. Also aware of the interdependence between the various actors in the arts milieu and their exhibition venues, Andréanne Roy examines the impact of the market on artistic practices and on the direction of certain public collections.

Recently, a major study on cultural philanthropy, conducted by businessman and patron of the arts Pierre Bourgie and a team of seven business experts involved in the cultural domain, resulted in a report that was submitted to the Quebec government. We invited Anne Bertrand to provide an overview of this report, summarizing its main points and highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.

In addition to these reflections centred on the Quebec and Canadian context, two essays take a critical look at the international market, focusing particularly on Asia, which occupies a considerable position in the current art market. At our request, Marie Maertens, author of L’Art du marché de l’art, published by Éditions Luc Pire in 2008, revisited a chapter of her book on emerging markets, including those of China and India. Pia Camilla Copper, for her part, tackles the prejudice against Chinese contemporary art and its rapidly growing market. Drawing on anecdotes from her personal experience in China, she sets about deconstructing certain myths and misconceptions.
