Holyoak, Jim

Foreigner —

Foreigner is one version from a varied edition of ten intaglio etchings, illustrating a book of poetry with the same title, written by Jim’s father, Keith Holyoak: “But I am just an ungainly bird staring mute from a bough, stopping a day and a night before I mount the sky to wander.”

Jim Holyoak grew up in coastal British Columbia, and is currently based in Montreal and Toronto. His discipline is composed of drawing-installations and book-works, that explore the bridges and boundaries between perception and fantasy, deep time and the present, and humans and other animals. He received a BFA from the University of Victoria, and an MFA from Concordia University, and he studied as an apprentice to master ink-painter Shen Ling Xiang, in Yangshuo, China. He has attended artist residencies in New York, Banff, Finland, the Netherlands, and throughout Norway. Holyoak has participated in over 100 exhibitions across North America and Europe, most recently at Expo Chicago. In 2011, his work was exhibited in the Québec Triennial at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, and in 2013 at the Yes, Naturally exhibition at the GEM Museum of Contemporary Art in The Hague. Currently, he is a professor of drawing at Sheridan College in Ontario. His work is included in private, corporate, and institutional collections such at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Senvest Collection of New Canadian Art, Loto-Québec, BMO, and the Musée d’art contemporain de Baie-Saint-Paul.
