Raccord 1

Raccord 1
Denis, Jean-Sébastien

Raccord 1 —

This drawing from the Raccords series is emblematic of Jean-Sébastien Denis’s work. By relating multiple elements, the work becomes a territory open to tensions, between painting and drawing, line and stain, impulse and construction. Space, shifting and impossible to quantify, is constantly questioned. A universe is created and recreated, expression and perception playing in the same piece of theatre; this mobile abstraction joins together a diversity of forms, thus creating a strange equilibrium from chaos.

In 1997, Jean-Sébastien Denis earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts from UQAM. He participated in the Symposium de la jeune peinture au Canada in 1995 and has participated in several group exhibitions, including Artifice in 1998 and Génération Montréal, Ville peinture in 2002. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented in Montreal, Toronto, and the United States. In 2010, he curated the exhibition Dessins at the Maison de la culture Frontenac. His works have been acquired by several public and private collections (Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto‑Québec, Hydro‑Québec, National Bank of Canada, BMO Financial Group, the Transcontinental Group, la Peau de l’Ours). The artist’s approach derives from a reflection on the movement and instability of the world around us and seeks to translate the complexity of the world through a diversity of pictorial methods. His recent series explore the connections between the palpable and virtual in our current reality.
