Raccord 2

Raccord 2
Denis, Jean-Sébastien

Raccord 2 —

This drawing from the Raccords series is emblematic of Jean-Sébastien Denis’s work. Through the interrelation of its many elements, the work becomes a field of tensions, between painting and drawing, line and blot, impulse and construction. Space is constantly interrogated, moving, impossible to resolve. A universe is created and recreated, expression and perception are players in the same theatre; an array of forms comes in play in this mobile abstraction and, thus, from chaos a strange equilibrium is achieved.

Born in Sherbrooke in 1970, Jean-Sébastien Denis received a BFA from UQAM in 1997. During his studies, he participated in the Symposium 95 de la jeune peinture au Canada. Since then, he has taken part in several group shows, including Artifice in 1998 and Montréal/Ville peinture in 2002. He has had solo exhibitions in Montreal and Toronto as well as in the United States. In 2010 he curated the exhibition Dessins at the Maison de la culture Frontenac. He was also awarded grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and his works may be found in both public and corporate collections (Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Loto-Québec, Hydro-Québec, National Bank of Canada, Transcontinental, La Peau de l’Ours).
