Beauséjour, Mathieu

Icarus —

Icarus, an etching, is part of a new body of work of the same name in which the artist dwells on Icarus’ last vision. After disobeying his father flying out the labyrinth, Icarus finds himself alone, intoxicated by the grandeur. What he sees is the sun, and what blinds him is the light. Before his fall, he might have a vision. These new works grapple with the impulse that drives human beings to always go further.

Mathieu Beauséjour, self-taught, has been creating installations, interventions, and images since the mid 1990s. His works have been shown in Canada and in Europe, in artists centres, public and private galleries, biennials, and museums. He has recently taken part in the group shows Au Travail (Musée régional de Rimouski), Ces artistes qui impriment (Blibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, Montreal), and Le Tarot de Montréal (Maison de la culture du Plateau Mont-Royal, Montreal). Forthcoming solo exhibitions will be held at AXENÉO7 (in Gatineau) in 2010, at Oboro (Montreal), and at Galerie Eponyme (Bordeaux, France). His works are part of the collections of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Archives nationales du Québec, the Collection Prêt d’œuvres d’art of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Régie de l’énergie du gouvernement du Québec, the McAuslan Brewery Inc., and many private collections. Beauséjour was awarded the 2009 Prix Giverny Capital.
