The Sleeping Hat —

The Sleeping Hat belongs to an extensive series of works exploring the trials and tribulations of a man from the country trying to conform to the rules of nature rather than those of human society. By transforming the body into a landscape, it becomes a receptacle for the mineral, vegetable, and animal worlds and takes exile in the world of mythology to embody the source. This collage is an amalgam of three works, which by their destruction and reconfiguration propose a new topography suggesting a magical place for relaxation.

Born in 1974 in British Columbia, Max Wyse lives and works in Montreal. In his practice, he proposes a symbiosis that takes effect between human and animal bodies. His works act as a mirror, revealing the tensions beneath the torn skin of a fantastical subconscious. His work has been presented in several solo and group exhibitions, notably at Galerie Trois Points and Centre Clark in Montreal, the Musée régional de Rimouski, Plein sud in Longueuil, and l’Œil de poisson in Quebec City. His work has also been shown in Paris, Vancouver, Toronto, and New York, and has been acquired by numerous public and private collections.
