Blue #1
Wang, Chih-Chien

Blue #1 —

Chih-Chien Wang’s works, mainly in photography and video, frequently contain subtle traces that might refer to personal, cultural, or social concerns while dealing primarily with his everyday experience. Blue #1 is from a series of colour studies dealing with the ambiguity between observing and representing colours. Eyes, machines, surfaces, light, air, and other indeterminate elements always make colours react, and no matter how neutral their representation, subjective factors also influence the visual outcome. The multiple decisions taken in the colour representation process become “rethinks” of both the artist’s principles and the use of contemporary media. The subject of Blue #1 is ribbon collected from the artist’s son’s first birthday party.

Born in Taiwan, Chih-Chien Wang has been living in Montreal since 2002. He received a BFA in Theatre and Cinema from the Chinese Culture University in Taipei in 1994 and produced television documentaries before moving to Canada where he earned his MFA in Studio Arts at Concordia University. Wang’s work has been exhibited in Montreal, Lausanne, Milan, New York, Ping Yao, Peterborough, and Toronto. Most recently, he has shown at the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and Pierre-François Ouellette art contemporain (Montreal).
