StopMotion: River —

Stop Motion: River is an image from a new suite of nine works. These digital prints began as images taken from a speeding train travelling across the English countryside shortly after a winter storm. The whiteness of the snow combined with the bleak, greyness of the land, created seemingly endless and highly contrasted scenes evocative of charcoal smudged drawings. What also fascinated the artist was the play between relativity of speed and motion. The elements closest to the train appear to be moving so fast that they became transparent blurs, while the objects furthest away seemed to be in near stillness.

Ed Pien received his BFA from the University of Western Ontario and his MFA from York University. His work has been shown at the Drawing Center (New York), La Biennale de Montréal, Centro Nacional de las Artes (Mexico City), the Goethe Institute (Berlin), Bizart (Shanghai), the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London). Pien’s work is included in numerous public and private collections, including the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal, the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), and the Art Gallery of Ontario (Toronto). In June, 2012, Pien will be participating in the 18th Biennale of Sydney.
