Le marais —

Here, humidity invades dry zones through the alternation and superposition of places. This time the marsh contaminates the image like the beginnings of a new painting. Midway between a past gesture and the tangible object that it will become, this evocation of landscape attacks the horizon, whose sky and soils it shares. The explosion is present beneath the figure of “the gesture” of the peat bog surrounded by glass panes planted there. In front, coloured prisms are witness to the apocalypse and the cosmos. This passage through the marsh allows this absurd universe to be eliminated and another to be accessed.

biography Born in 1981, Hugo Bergeron lives and works in Montreal. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Visual and Media Arts from the École des arts visuels et médiatiques de l’UQAM (2008). In 2009, he presented his first solo exhibition of paintings in Montreal at Galerie Graff, which has represented the artist since 2008, followed by a subsequent solo exhibition in October 2011 showcasing his recent work. Bergeron’s works are part of numerous collections, notably the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec’s Prêt d’œuvres d’art and those of the National Bank of Canada, Desjardins, and Loto-Québec. Bergeron was a finalist in the 2010 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. His works question painting itself, its power and history, pictorial representation, and landscape, and invite us to reflect upon the figure and the emblematic symbols of the era being depicted.
