Écran en hiver ―

Écran en hiver is part of a body of images accumulated over the last twenty years. In it there are images of all sorts of things: snapshots and lots of interrupted projects. These images are structured according to the various points of view—central or orthogonal framing, or the creation of a parallel between the film plane and the plane of the photographic subject. They often produce a flattening out of space possibly linked to the practice of painting that preceded Paiement's photographic work.

Alain Paiement was born in Montreal in 1960 and studied visual arts at UQAM, La Cambre (Brussels) and the Université de Paris 1. He is a professor in the School of Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. He has presented many solo exhibitions including: Sometimes Square at the Musée d’art contemporain in Montreal (1994), Mappemondes at the Musée d’art moderne de Liège (1999), The world as I found it at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York (2003), Tangent(e) at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal (2003), Le monde en chantier at the Galerie de l’UQAM in Montreal (2002) and the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in Quebec City (2004), Surfacing at the Galerie Contretype in Brussels (2007), Cells at the Leo Kamen Gallery in Toronto (2008) and Arrangements d’après nature at the Darling Foundry in Montreal (2010). He has also shown in numerous group exhibitions. His work is included in a great number of public and private collections including those of the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Musée d’art contemporain in Montreal, Hydro-Québec, the Royal Bank of Canada, the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Schulich School of Business (York University), the Foundation Sorigué (Lérida, Spain), and the Banque Nationale de Belgique.
