Échecs luxuriants no 3 —

Échecs luxuriants no 3 is part of a series of three paintings exhibited in an installation at the Maison de la culture Frontenac in 2009. Produced a layer at time, the painting reveals, through a variety of hints, the slow process of accumulation and distillation by which it takes shape. These procedures are necessary for modulating the surfaces from which Bilodeau’s typically desolate landscapes emerge. Melting into the rest of the pictorial field, the image only appears as traces and runs that suggest the complexity of the painting’s construction and deconstruction.

Conscious of his work’s durability, Simon Bilodeau has a painting practice that is inscribed in a given time. Conceptually, his pictorial work references installation practice. His painting becomes the tangible and vestigial evidence of the work’s existence in the world. Having completed a BA in visual and media arts at UQAM in 2007 and now pursuing an MA, Bilodeau has already participated in several group shows and produced three solo exhibitions. He is represented by Art Mûr and lives and works in Montreal. In February 2011, he will be presenting a significant solo project, with an accompanying publication, at the Maison des arts de Laval’s Salle Alfred-Pellan.
