Bear Butte, South Dakota —

Bear Butte is a landmark that rises out from the Great Plains of South Dakota. Undoubtedly a remarkable site, the mountain stands out as a natural wonder, however the Butte’s cultural significance is as intriguing as its geological history. The mountain has been an important spiritual site for Native Americans for thousands of years and continues to be the end point of a sacred pilgrimage. Today is it a protected state park but the fire that consumed the mountain in 1996 provides a metaphor for its colonial history.

Jessica Auer lives and works in Montreal where she obtained an MFA from Concordia University. Recent solo exhibitions include Re-creational Spaces at Galerie Thérèse Dion (Montréal, 2007) and Toronto Image Works (Toronto, 2008). Auer is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, and her work is held in various private and public collections such as the Canada Council Art Bank, Fidelity Investments, CollectArt, Standard Life, and the Bibliothèque nationale du Québec. Auer is a co-founder and co-director of Galerie Les Territoires in Montreal and currently teaches photography at Concordia University.
