57 – Signatures

Spring / Summer 2006

As a sign of authenticity, the signature indicates the artwork’s origin. It has always permitted the artist to assert his or her singularity and has stood both as evidence and a point of reference for the grounding of aesthetic judgments. This issue appeals to reflections on the multiple ways of identifying or signing a work or to the artistic process itself, what we can call the new forms of signatures, and includes the portfolio of Carl Trahan.
